With the history of planting tea for over 2000 years, Vietnam is one of the largest and oldest tea-producing countries in the world. Although the history of Vietnamese tea has not been well recorded as that of the Chinese or Japanese, tea drinking occupies an essential role in Vietnamese culture, both in the past and in the present. Drinking tea is a beautiful custom in Vietnamese culture.
Tee trees have been grown from the midlands to the high mountains, from the Northern to Central Highlands of Vietnam. Some of the most famous areas in producing tea in Vietnam are Phu Tho, Thai Nguyen, Ha Giang, Moc Chau, Lai Chau, Lam Dong,..
1, Green tea
Green tea must always be the first to be mentioned whenever one talks about Vietnamese tea. You can see people drinking green tea at very small street vendors in Vietnam with the price under 1.5 cents per cup. After meals, family members gather and talk about what they have done during the day while drinking tea. There is an interesting fact that Vietnamese people consume quite expensive types of tea with prices above 10$ but the average price of tea exported is just around 2$.
Green tea from Tan Cuong District (Thai Nguyen Province) is famous for its strong and sweet aftertaste while the tea cultivated in high mountainous areas such as Moc Chau, Lai Chau, Ha Giang tend to be lighter and purer with floral scent. Phu Tho tea has a variety of qualities but shares the same characteristics of bitter taste and good appearance. Most of the exported tea is raw tea.
2, Black tea
Black tea has just been cultivated widely since the 1880s under the French colonial regime. The quality of tea buds grown in suitable soil, climate, production, and cultivation has increased constantly. Black tea materials mostly can be found in Phu Tho, Yen Bai, Tuyen Quang… Although exporting a lot, most of the black tea consumed in Vietnam is imported with many famous brands such as: Dilmah, Lipton, Harney & Sons… Today, black tea is mostly used in tea bags in coffee shops and restaurants. Young people also drink a lot of black tea in milk tea. Brands like Gong Cha, KOI, and Royaltea have become more popular and gained a steady increase in sales in recent years. It’s worth noting that the price of black tea exported by Vietnam is not high, only about 1.7$/kg, but a cup of milk tea can cost more than 2-3$.
Today, despite many new types of imported tea products, especially milk tea and bubble tea, the core of Vietnamese tea culture is still preserved through the generations, such as the unique way of drinking fresh tea that has existed for thousands of years.
